The Bread Barn™ – An Indianapolis Farmhouse Bakery Story

When Sheila first dreamed out loud about starting The Bread Barn™, she said something simple: “I’m not looking to be famous. I just want to make bread for our community.”

That vision has guided every loaf since our doors opened this summer. From day one, our focus has been less about business and more about building a place where bread and community rise together.
A Journey That Began Abroad
Before the first sourdough hit the shelves in Franklin Township, our family spent three weeks on the road in Europe — 25 bakeries, 11 cities, 7 countries. From the lamination of Paris croissants to the hearty rye loaves of Cologne, from pistachio pastries in Amsterdam to cream-filled maritozzi in Rome, we studied how bread connects people across cultures.

Those lessons shaped The Bread Barn’s launch: a June 28th grand opening filled with rustic French loaves, cinnamon rolls, and sourdoughs baked with old-world techniques and Midwestern heart.
What “Indianapolis Farmhouse Bakery” Means to Us
Craft. Naturally leavened loaves, careful fermentation, crisp crusts, tender crumb — farmhouse flavors made in small batches for our neighbors in Franklin Township and across Indianapolis.
Care. Serving shut-ins, celebrating teachers, encouraging first responders — because bread is one of the simplest ways to show up for people.
Consistency. Posted menus, transparent pickup, and a neighborly self-serve experience you can count on every Market Day.
Calling, not clout. We’re not doing this for fame or profit; we’re doing it to share our love of bread and our love for community. We’ll make mistakes — we’re human — but we will never put profit before people. Call us, and we will make it better than right! You matter more than anything else.
Shaping the next bakers. We’re privileged to involve local youth in Bread Barn tasks — building work ethic, entrepreneurial thinking, and the art of the side hustle through hands-on learning.

Giving back. On September 20, 2025, 100% of all Market Day proceeds will be donated to Calvary Tabernacle to support local ministry in the communities where our customers live, work, and worship. Read the full announcement →
Media, Mentions & Momentum
It’s barely been two months since opening, but The Bread Barn™ has already caught the attention of Indianapolis Monthly, Mirror Indy, and two respected local food bloggers who highlighted our farmhouse approach to sourdough, cinnamon rolls, and rustic loaves.
Even more meaningful? Dozens of customer reviews pouring in — neighbors describing cinnamon rolls with “outstanding flavor,” sourdough that “tastes like home,” and a farmhouse space that feels “warm and welcoming.”
These voices affirm what we’ve known all along: bread matters most when it brings people together.
Bread That Travels Further
Though rooted in Franklin Township, our loaves have reached tables in Greenwood, Beech Grove, Franklin, Fishers, Greenfield, and beyond. Elderly shut-ins, teachers, firefighters, and families across Indianapolis have already tasted the joy of small-batch farmhouse bread shared with love.

Every Market Day brings new faces, new conversations, and a growing community woven together one loaf at a time.
From Our Farmhouse Kitchen to Yours
The Bread Barn™ isn’t just a place to pick up bread — it’s a movement to slow down, savor, and share. Whether you’re stopping in for a cinnamon roll, ordering a sourdough sandwich loaf for the week, or supporting the September 20th charity Market Day, you’re part of something bigger: an Indianapolis farmhouse bakery rooted in faith, family, and community.

We invite you to follow the journey, share the bread, and taste what happens when neighbors come together around the table.
